    inMotion opens Toronto production office

    04 May 2012 in Blog

On the eve of the twentieth century, their bespectacled faces bright with prosperity, owners of the Toronto Carpet Manufacturing Company celebrated the fact that every homeowner in the free world wanted TCMC’s signature chenille below their feet.  A new, revolutionary factory was going up on King Street West to supply the growing demand.  In 1899, this was a staggering, Canadian-made success story that saw nearly 1,000 employees move into a state-of-the-art facility, where they could practice their craft using the... inMotion Team Members Win OIFF 72-Hour Film Challenge

    20 Feb 2012 in Blog & News

“Encore,” an original film written, shot, and edited by inMotion team members Robin Léveillé and Jonathan Kischel with Valerie St. Arnaud and Cierra Campeau, walked away with first place from the Ottawa International Film Festival’s annual 72-hour film challenge. The award was announced during an evening gala at the Lieutenant’s Pump on Thursday, February 16th. Jonathan and Robin recently sat down to describe their experience, and what it took (besides caffeine) to win such a tough competition. MF: Tell me... Read More...

    inMotion, Alone

    23 Jan 2012 in Blog

Got to the office earlier than usual today, and took my Starbucks cup for a little walk through the building.  I was looking for the kind of slow-engine roll-over that thousands of people do in thousands of offices every morning.  Hey, how’s it going, nice shirt, any plans for the weekend, please stop raiding my stash of jelly bellies, etc. But I was thwarted: this place was completely, unequivocally empty.  I felt like I was wandering a post-apocalyptic world, with... What you missed if you missed the party

    16 Dec 2011 in Blog

It starts somewhere between your home and Carling Avenue, as your taxi hums along winter-slick streets.  You’ve heard about the drivers they’ve hired to shuttle everyone home after the party, and the thought gives you a little thrill, like you’re a celebrity.  You sneak a glance at your reflection in the car window.  City lights rise and fade beyond your face and you feel a pang of pity for everyone driving in the opposite direction.  They don’t know what you... inMotion’s Moving Day

    15 Feb 2011 in Blog

Boyd Avenue at 7:30 a.m. on a Sunday morning in winter is as serene as a cottage lake: the 417 is whisper-quiet, the air sparkles with crystalline cold, and apart from a vet in mint-coloured scrubs walking a dog around the animal clinic, there’s a feeling that the whole world is asleep under mountainous duvets — except for the inMotion crowd, who are spending their Sunday beating a path between 894 and 891 Boyd with characteristic exuberance. We arrived early,... Read More...

    Approximate Directions to a Home

    21 Jan 2011 in Blog

In the bizarre confluence of everyday life, I’m preparing to move apartments at the same time that inMotion is preparing to move facilities. This gives me a feeling of cottony affection for the disembodied twin-engine powerhouse where I work—we’re both looking with nervous excitement at what lies ahead, certain that we’re making the right choices but a little galled by the courage those choices require. Even our reasons for moving are similar. inMotion has outgrown the workspace at 894 Boyd,... Read More...

    We all have a reason

    08 Dec 2010 in Blog

[youtubelink url="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W8CvzXY8wAg"][/youtubelink] My dad left his job with the Vancouver police force in order to buy a farm. From my mom’s stories of rural life, he had cobbled together a dream of running his own show from the seat of a tractor. When I turned three, our family held its breath and traded the featherbed of suburbia for 100 stubbled acres off a dirt road in rural Ontario. It worked for a few years. When things got lean, we converted... Read More...

A room with a view of the future

    26 Nov 2010 in Blog

I was eight years old when I had my first experience as a producer. I co-founded the Rotten Egg Yolk Radio Hour, which was largely a traffic report from the dirt road next to our farmhouse (“Two red cars and a tractor in the last half hour! It’s a real jam, folks!”). The Rotten Egg Yolk Radio Hour retired from the airwaves after its second installment due to the pressing demands of grade three. In the intervening years, I’ve learned... Read More...

How the word “Producer” entered my vocabulary

    15 Nov 2010 in Blog

Here’s the difference between working at inMotion, and working anywhere else: at inMotion, you feed your brain only supreme fuel. No diesel. No sub-grade discount McThinking. At this shop, you turn your mind on when you walk in the door, and hum like a Ferrari until the work is done (or until you absolutely have to get some sleep or your body will rebel, whichever comes first). I know all of this because I’ve been with inMotion for two months... Read More...
